How to commission a portrait

Have a look at my Gallery on this website and decide if my style of painting is right for you. Commissioning a portrait is an exciting and important decision so I want you to be happy with the process and the final result.

I prefer to take new photographs specifically for the portrait but it is possible to use existing ones if they are of high quality. I will do this for no extra charge if you live locally (within 15km of Chipping Sodbury); if you live further away there will be a small extra cost.

If you have a photograph in mind, high resolution images (but less than 8MB for e-mails, please) are best, taken in good lighting. Often, pictures with higher levels of contrast and pronounced lighting from one aspect where the subject is not looking directly at the camera make a good starting point.

It may be convenient to send photos using a Cloud sharing facility such as Microsoft One Drive  or Google Drive.

How much will it cost?

Prices begin at £250 with a £75 non-refundable deposit and do not include framing, visits (if required) or delivery.

The prices are for a single figure with a plain background. The cost will increase for multi-figure paintings and paintings with complex elements or backgrounds.

If you are not satisfied with the final portrait you can have a refund (excluding the deposit)- see the Terms and Conditions section.

What next?

  1. Have a look at the Terms and Conditions
  2. Contact me by phone or email so we can discuss your wishes and talk through the process.
  3. If you have a photograph in mind please send it to me or I can take some.  If you are local, I can do this for free.
  4. There is no commitment until you are sure, at which point we will agree the cost, usually with a signed agreement, and there will be a non-refundable deposit to pay.
  5. I can provide updates as the portrait progresses. When it is nearly finished, I will e-mail you a photograph for review. If you are happy with it then the final payment will be necessary after which, I will arrange for the portrait to be delivered.

How long will it take?

A head and shoulders portrait takes about two months to complete. More complex portraits will probably take longer.  If you need it more quickly let me know and I’ll see if that is possible.
